Our pre-school playgroup has been running since 1966.  This is a wonderful achievement for parents and staff from the local community.  Our aim has always been to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment for our young children and, more recently, we have committed ourselves to providing a specially tailored curriculum leading to approved learning outcomes.

We meet on Monday and Friday afternoons from 12.45 to 3.15pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9.15 to 11.45am during school term time.  We welcome children from 2½ years of age who are fully toilet trained.  In order to smooth their introduction into Playgroup we also welcome a limited number of accompanied younger children (2 - 2½ years of age) for the Monday afternoon session.

How our Pre-school is run

We are a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance (P.L.A.), which is a national organization promoting and supporting pre-schools. We are not run or funded by the P.L.A., but by a committee made up of parent volunteers, with half-termly meetings and an A.G.M. each June. This management committee deals with the administration of Playgroup, allowing the staff to concentrate on teaching our children.  The involvement of parents is therefore essential, and regular newsletters and social events help to keep everyone informed and enthusiastic.  As a registered charity we are a non-profit making organization and all fees and money raised during fund-raising is used to meet running expenses and activities.

Staff and Curriculum

The recent introduction of Local Education Authority funding for 3 and 4 year olds has allowed us to expand our curriculum, and increase the staffing levels so that there are no more than 5 children per member of staff.  Most of our staff either hold relevant qualifications or are studying to further their qualifications.  We offer a curriculum that follows the nationally adopted Early Learning Goals.  The key areas for development are: Physical development; Fine motor skills; Language and listening; Social behavior and play; Intellectual development; Feeding and toileting.  This prepares our children to progress with confidence to the National Curriculum at school.
