Mothers Union
The M.U. is a Christian organisation which promotes and supports family values and families worldwide. It started in the Church of England and there are now a million members of the Mothers' Union around the world with projects varying from farming initiatives, HIV Aids awareness and literacy in Africa, to parenting groups, contact centres, work in prisons (including Foston Hall locally) and family holidays for those in need in the U.K.. Members world wide are united in prayer and fellowship.
This year (2004) the Mothers' Union celebrates its 128th Anniversary. Through its long history it has seen many changes. Society and the lives of women have changed greatly since the M.U. was founded and as an organisation we have also evolved.
In 1876 Mary
Sumner set up a "mothers' union wherein all classes could unite in faith
and prayer". Today the M.U. has members in 60 different countries all
working towards improving family life in their own communities through practical
action and prayer.
Because it has become known for its involvement in vital outreach projects in
hospitals, in prisons, in refugee camps, in fact wherever there is a need,
either here or abroad, the M.U. has become an organisation with a global voice
influencing issues such as international debt and family welfare.
As the M.U. goes forward into its 126th year and beyond, it will continue to be a relevant, influential and active organisation.
